One of Staffordshire Independant Adoption Panel memebers has kindly shared their experinces of adoption…
“I was adopted as a three month old baby forty five years ago when adoption was very different to today. Scant information was passed on and I have no information other than my place of birth. I was adopted by my wonderful mum and dad who provided a safe, secure home for me and my two unrelated siblings to grow in. It has not always been plain sailing we had our arguments and sibling rivalry as in any other family but it never felt as if I or my family were different because we were adopted.
I have always known that I was adopted and used to announce it not really knowing what it meant. As my understanding of what adopted meant grew so did my explanation of it and I have always been proud that I am adopted and keen to dispel many of the misconceptions and ignorance surrounding the beliefs that some people hold. It has always felt quite alien to me when people have said but they aren’t your mom and dad. Of course they are, I have birth parents but my adopted mom and dad were and will always be my forever parents as they nurtured me and shaped who I am today.
I was given the freedom to explore and discover who I was whilst feeling there was a secure base. I wondered about my birth parents at different points in my life I have never felt the need to search them out the primary reason being that I have been happy and contented with my me and my lot. Adoption gave me a family and my parents the trials and tribulations of being a parent and none of us would have had it any other way.
My over-riding experience of adoption is feeling special and chosen, that’s what we were told as if we were missing pieces of a jigsaw that complete the picture and for me that is what being a family is all about, individual pieces making up a whole. I would urge anyone who feels there is a piece of their family missing to consider the joy and sense of completion adopting a child can bring.”
