Skills Needed for Fostering

People who can provide a safe, caring home, and who have the time, patience and commitment to give to a child.

You would need to show an understanding of the needs of a child who has been separated from their family.

People who can work as part of a team.

You will be expected to work closely with professionals from a wide range of services including Children & Lifelong Learning, Vulnerable Children's Services, Health Department and Education.

People who can ask for, and use support.

You will have your own social worker who will offer you help, advice and support.

People who are prepared to learn.

You will be required to attend a preparation course prior to your approval as a foster carer. You will also be expected to continue your professional development by working towards achieving certificates on successful completion of the Children's Workforce Development Council, Training, Support & Development Standards for Foster Carers.
