Fostering Frequently Asked Questions

How long will it take for us to be approved as Foster Carers?

We aim to complete your assessment within six months from the time that we recieve your formal application.

How long will it take before we have a child placed with us?

This depends on the category and number of children for whom you are approved, and the children who need to be looked after at any one time.

Am I too old?

There is no upper or lower age limit, but we do like you to have had some life experience and if you are an older person, to have a healthy lifestyle.

We are not married, can we still foster?

Yes

I am single - can I foster?

Yes

Do I have to own my own house?

No – although if you rent your home we expect your tenancy to be secure. You will need to check that your landlord agrees to you fostering.

Does the child need their own bedroom?

It is preferable for a child to have their own bedroom but in some circumstances it is acceptable for children to share a bedroom.

What age would the children / child have to be?

Children from 0-18 may require fostering. The age of child you may care for will depend on your own experience and preference and on the ages of any children you already have.

Can I foster more than one child?

Yes. But this may depend on other factors including whether you have the space, especially bedroom space, and time to care for more than one foster child.

What about employment?

You can be employed or unemployed. If you are employed you need to be flexible to be available to meet the needs of a child, for example to be at home when the child leaves for school and returns from school and to be available during school holidays.

Will I be paid for fostering a child?

You will recieve an allowance for caring for a child. This will cover the expenses of looking after a child. In addition we have a Payment for Skills scheme which recognises foster carers’ skills.

Will I need additional equipment for caring for a child?

You will be supplied with essential equipment, e.g. beds, bedding, bedroom furniture.

What support will I recieve?

You will have your own social worker who will support you. You will also have the opportunity to meet with other foster carers at our regular Support groups.
