What expectations do we have?
We believe in an open and honest attitude within adoption and we expect adoptive applicants to share this attitude in the best interests of children who are adopted. Children have a right to know they are adopted and to have their questions answered sensitively. We expect adopters to talk to their adoptive children about adoption.
We run a Postbox service, which is an exchange of letters and photographs between the adoptive family and the birth family. This exchange takes place through Family Placement Services and does not involve direct contact. This is an ongoing exchange, which continues until the child is an adult and with which we expect adopters to comply.
We expect adopters to agree in principle to meet the child's birth parents on a one-off basis. In order that at some point in the future they will be able to talk to the child about their birth parents from a more personal perspective. This also helps to reassure the birth parents about the care their child will receive. These meetings take place in a neutral venue and in our experience have been successful from everyone's point of view.
